Consultative Status

COHRE has consultative, participatory or observer status with several key international and regional bodies.

At the international level, COHRE is an NGO in Special Consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC). This is the principal form of accreditation to the UN for NGOs, and allows COHRE to designate official representatives to the UN in New York and Geneva and to participate in an official capacity in the work of UN bodies such as the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR).

COHRE also has consultative status with the Organization of American States (OAS), enabling it to participate in OAS activities in an official capacity including lodging petitions before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

In Africa, COHRE has observer status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, which allows it to submit petitions before the Commission as well as to participate in the Commission's human rights monitoring mechanisms.

In Europe, COHRE has participatory status with the Council of Europe (CoE), allowing it to appear before and make submissions to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Committee on Social Rights (ECSR).
