Fact Finding Missions
Investigating housing rights violations
COHRE carries out regular fact-finding missions to investigate reports of alleged
housing rights violations and forced evictions. Our fact-finding missions usually involve
external experts in international human rights law and other relevant fields. In addition
to gathering facts, such missions are also used as an opportunity to provide local
organisations with objective analyses of the status of housing rights and related human
rights in the country concerned.
On occasion, COHRE expands its review to include other economic, social and cultural
rights such as health, education, food, water and labour. In all cases, the COHRE
mission team gathers information on the country's compliance with its international
housing obligations as contained in various international covenants and conventions.
(You can see which international human rights treaties your country is a party to by
visiting our section on Using the UN).
After completing fact-finding missions, COHRE issues an independent and objective
report based on the mission team's findings. These reports are distributed to the
communities, governments and other bodies involved, as well as to local and
international media and a range of non-governmental and private organisations.
COHRE’s fact-finding missions have included those to the Philippines (1993); Dominican Republic (1994); Japan (1995); Turkey (1996); St. Vincent and the Grenadines (1997); Latvia, Mexico and Solomon Islands (1998); Bangladesh, East Timor, El Salvador and Zimbabwe (2000); Brazil (2001); Brazil, Cambodia, Morocco, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and The Gambia (2002); Colombia, Guatemala, Rwanda, South Africa and Zambia (2003); Argentina, Cambodia, Ireland, Jordan, South Africa, Senegal, United Kingdom (2004); Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe (2005); Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (2007); Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (2008).
Reports on COHRE's fact-finding missions can be found in the COHRE Library, Country Reports section.
