COHRE has an office in Accra, Ghana and has worked for several years in order to promote and protect housing and water rights in Ghana, including work to prevent, halt or remedy forced evictions. For instance, since 2003 COHRE has been working with the Agbogbloshie community, a settlement of some 20 to 30,000 persons in Accra, in order to prevent their forced eviction. More recently, COHRE has intervened on behalf of hundred of persons facing forced eviction from settlements near railway lines.
COHRE has also been instrumental in reforming Ghana's housing policy in order to bring it in line with international human rights law.
COHRE also is a member of the National Planning Committee on World Habitat Day Celebrations in Ghana.
COHRE RWP PUBLICATION ON THE GHANAIAN WATER AND SANITATION SECTOR
The Right to Water Programme (RWP) of the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) has today, 23 February 2009, released a report on the Ghanaian water and sanitation sector. This publication reviews the existing legal and policy framework of the Ghanaian water and sanitation sector using international human rights standards. The objective of the review is to determine the extent to which the framework guarantees the right to water and sanitation in accordance with Ghana's international human rights obligations. The report titled A rights-based review of the Ghanaian water and sanitation sector, highlights key areas requiring attention and makes specific recommendations for improvement.
