Executive director's welcome

Human rights start at home, but only if you have one.

Globally, the right to adequate housing is one of the most violated of all internationally recognized human rights.

The consequences for the world's poor majority are devastating.

In trying to address this issue over the years, we have some great successes – halting planned evictions, winning court decisions in favour of housing rights, and influencing international human rights bodies – and also some disappointments, such as when communities we have been working with for years are forcibly evicted overnight.

But both our successes and disappointments show us that COHRE has a pivotal role to play in achieving the changes necessary to realise the human right to housing for millions of people worldwide.

Through our direct work in COHRE’s focus countries and our indirect work in other countries through collaboration with activist networks, COHRE is able to address housing rights and evictions anywhere in the world – and draw attention to them through media work and advocacy work with UN bodies in Geneva and elsewhere.

One of the most important tools we have is our website. As you will see as you explore our new site and review the vast quantities of valuable information contained here, COHRE has been very busy since our founding in 1994. But that is only to be expected. Our work embodies the key questions of humanity’s future – particularly those crucial to the fate of the poor majorities in many countries and in all regions of the world.

It is work that we could not have done without the continued, unwavering support of our donors and other supporters, for which we are very grateful. We pledge to continue the good work we have been doing over the last 15-plus years, and to strive for new heights in the struggle to achieve housing rights for all.
