COHRE at Work
A brief look at COHRE's activities and programmes

COHRE's overall objective is to promote and protect the housing rights of everyone, everywhere. To achieve this, COHRE has developed a varied work programme, guided by international human rights law and designed for maximum effectiveness. Our work involves housing rights training and education; research and publications; monitoring, documenting and preventing forced evictions; undertaking fact-finding missions; participation and advocacy within the United Nations and regional human rights bodies; and providing legal advocacy and advice to communities and organisations involved in housing rights campaigns.

To ensure COHRE activities reach every corner of the world, COHRE also has three Regional Programmes, focusing on housing rights in Africa, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific. COHRE also works in Europe on a range of European Projects.

In addition to this general and regional work, COHRE operates the following four thematic programmes:
Global Forced Evictions Programme
Litigation Programme
Right to Water Programme
Women and Housing Rights Programme

COHRE works closely with a very broad range of partners – from grassroots housing rights activists to non-governmental and community-based organisations and national, regional and international institutions. We believe such collaborative partnerships are the key to achieving our common goal of housing rights for all people, everywhere – a daunting challenge for any one group. You can browse a list of grassroots organisations that COHRE works with under Grassroots Programmes in the Taking Action section.

COHRE is also committed to local and national capacity-building in the area of economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights, and places particular emphasis on securing respect for the housing rights of traditionally disadvantaged groups, including women, children, ethnic or other minorities and indigenous peoples. To this end, COHRE is available to assist non-governmental organisations and government agencies to better promote and protect housing rights.
