National advocacy
COHRE's aim in national advocacy is greater compliance of national laws and policies with international standards on housing rights.
COHRE's national advocacy work is two-fold: direct advocacy with governments, and strengthening national groups’ capacity to influence policies and laws that govern housing practices in their countries, and to stop forced evictions.
COHRE regularly sends "protests letters" to governments regarding their housing rights practices and when we are aware of imminent housing rights violations, such as mass forced evictions. You can view these letters in the relevant country pages of this website.
COHRE also combines its international experience and use of the international human rights legal framework with its presence on the ground in every region to strengthen local housing rights groups – especially those that serve community-based organizations among the poor populations of key countries. This includes increasing the use by local actors of international housing rights standards in the work.
COHRE then uses the achievements won at the national level to inspire further change internationally toward the greater realization of the human right to adequate housing and the prohibition of forced evictions.
