Sudan
The Sudan has suffered through years of forced eviction and forced displacement, most recently in the Darfur region. Forced eviction and forced displacement in The Sudan is all too often carried out by the most brutal means, including killings and rape as well as the destruction of housing, slaughter of livestock, burning of crops and poisoning of water supplies.
COHRE works both to hold the Republic of The Sudan accountable for forced evictions and accompanying human rights violations as well as to seek remedies for those evicted over the year, and in particular housing, land and property restitution. In 2003 the COHRE ESC Rights Litigation Programme filed a case before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights seeking to hold The Sudan accountable for human rights violations in the Darfur region as well as Provisional Measures to stop further violations. Meanwhile, the COHRE Housing and Property Restitution Programme continues to work at seeking remedies for those evicted in the South, with a particular focus on housing, land and property restitution.
